Salisbury’s young tyros have been answering every question asked of them this season, even making light of some atrocious conditions when a more pragmatic approach may have been deemed the more sensible approach. Visiting Wimborne, never an easy place to pick up points, with late changes to the line-up and the tail end of Storm Malik lashing the pitch, posed yet another difficult problem to solve.
Salisbury were forced into late changes in key positions but still they were able to emerge with a bonus point win despite falling behind early.
Salisbury maintained their good form with a convincing win 20-43 at Swindon College Old Boys and retained second place in the league. The backs started very strongly, with William Lewin returning a drop out and scything through for a superb try in the first minute. This was quickly followed by a reaching punt from Blake Ryder deep into the host’s territory which was collected by Dan Hammond who crossed for the second score, converted by Tom Tully.
Salisbury have played some glorious rugby this year, moving the ball with ambition to set their exciting back line attack from all angles but conditions on Saturday demanded more pragmatism. It is a mark of maturity from this young side that they got it. Swindon are a good and disciplined side, back in September they inflicted Salisbury’s sole defeat, and wise heads seem to concur that the weather and the mud would suit their game.
It has been some years since Salisbury last visited Dorchester in a competitive fixture noted the hosts’ programme, in fact it was seven years almost to the day and the visitors ran out 10-67 victors on that occasion. Since then the fortunes of both sides have risen and fallen and they find themselves doing battle in Tribute Southern Counties South.
