Building links with our local Schools
Jason Yarwood, our Director of Youth Rugby, has been working with Mark Lerpiniere and our local schools to give more girls and boys the chance to try rugby and join Salisbury RFC.
You may have seen a lot more activity at the Club on recent Wednesdays. We have been hosting groups of boys and girls from our local Secondary Schools, providing many with their first experience of rugby. Led by Mark and James Kaminsky, supported by coaches from our age-groups and several of our U16 Players, we have already run sessions for approximately 100, running through rugby specific skills and ending in games.
We are hoping to expand the programme and re-launch a 6th form 'Club' that was going to kick-off just as Mr Covid hit town, bringing together the 6th Form and Wiltshire Colleges with Sarum Academy. Our plan is to train as a 'Barbarians' squad and then play games, following the same format adopted for the U16s Schools group that Mark and James have brought together for games against Bishop Wordsworth School. This has been very successful and demonstrates how much interest there is for Rugby, if we can help find ways to give access to coaches and matches. Ultimately our aim is to support the establishment of teams in the Schools, allowing them to play their own fixtures.
