U15s Blank Trowbridge in Cup Thriller

Hard fought win makes it two in a row for the U15s in the D&W Cup Competition.

SRFC U15s travelled to Trowbridge RFC for the second of our D&W Cup Pool games. Both teams were confident on the back of impressive wins in their first gamesand the stage was set for a cracking competitive match.

Trowbridge came out all guns blazing in the first half and Salisbury met them on the tackle line, not willing to give an inch in ground. On the back foot and playing a defensive game SRFC soaked up the pressure and a mix of solid breakdown technique, line speed and dogged determination prevented the Trowbridge backs from exploiting any space they found. On the odd occasion they did break the line then solid tackles from Harvey D at fullback stopped them in their tracks. After 15 minutes in was the turn of SRFC and a strong run from Carlos Kantolinna was rewarded with a try.

Half Time: Trowbridge 0-5 Salisbury

At the start of the second half the players coming off the bench added new energy to the defensive line as Trowbridge continued to apply pressure. However, the pre-season investment and focus on S&D to develop ‘60 minute’ players paid off. Trowbridge visibly tired whilst the Salisbury team continued to compete effectively.

Alfie Maidmentmade, on his cup debut, came off the bench to drive hard to the Trowbridge line. The game continued to ebb and flow with Salisbury getting stronger. Another try saving tackle from Harvey D kept Trowbridge out. Alex B, at 10, kicked twice in short succession to intelligently move Salisbury towards the try line and to relieve the pressure. Carlos K exploited the opportunity and drove over for his second before Sam Waters added the extra 2 to make it 12-0 and take the game beyond Trowbridge’s reach.

At the final whistle the sense of team spirit was awesome. The squad had performed as a unit and were able to prevent Trowbridge who had amassed 56 points the week before from scoring. The scene is set for our home fixture in January when we meet Trowbridge for the next game In the Pool Stage. All the boys should be extremely proud of how they and the team played – Well done! Training on Wednesday – still lots to work on as we drive to deliver our potential…. see you there!

Full Time: Trowbridge 0-12 Salisbury

Tries: Carlos Kantolinna (2), Cons: Sam Waters (1)
