Salisbury U14s travelled to Basingstoke for a friendly on Sunday 4th February. Both squads were down on numbers due to injuries and other commitments so we had a joint training session then half an hour of rugby with our forwards and their backs vs our backs and their forwards. Things looked pretty even so we finished with a final competitive half an hour of Salisbury vs Basingstoke. After close fought rugby, the Basingstoke fly half pounced on a loose ball and ran in a try from near the 22 metre line but a good chase and goal line tackle from Sam and Jacob Pike kept the score out wide and the tricky conversion was missed. Salisbury remained patient until quick ball from an excellent scrum on the opposition 22 metre line was whipped out fast to Byron, who cut back in through a gap and scored, having the presence of mind to get under the posts before touching the ball down so he could be sure of kicking his own conversion to make it 7:5. A little later starting from another dominant Salisbury scrum, Bertie made ground and offloaded to Byron who was well-tackled and the offload went backwards but loose, to be picked up by Danny who stormed in to score in the corner. Final score 12:5 to Salisbury. Their players’ player selection was Byron and coaches’ player was a newish Salisbury player who carried well and put in some tackles – well done Jacob Priestley. Good to see Edward back from injury and honourable mentions to Dylan for barn-storming runs and Leo for putting in (and soaking up!) some excellent tackles.
