This was the Wiltshire Cup final, also serving as the semi-final for the Dorset & Wilts Cup final. It was a repeat of last year’s closely contested final, where Salisbury secured victory with a last-minute try. Although the scoreline suggests a comfortable win, Marlborough made them work exceptionally hard throughout.
Salisbury started strongly, taking an early 7-0 lead, but Marlborough responded quickly to make it 7-5. As the match progressed, Salisbury extended their advantage to 12-5, then 14-5, before widening the gap to 21-5. Despite the increasing margin, Marlborough remained determined, forcing Salisbury into a strong defensive effort. “Our defence is outstanding today,” observed one supporter, as the team worked tirelessly in the heat.
Marlborough continued to battle and reduced the deficit to 26-10, but Salisbury remained in control to secure the win. The game was not without controversy, as Salisbury received two yellow cards, but they held their composure to close out the match. “Way to go, lads, brilliant game,” came the verdict from the touchline.
The victory means Salisbury are now Wiltshire U18 Champions and will now face Blandford to see who becomes the Dorset & Wilts Champions in the D&W final at North Dorset on 27 April, Kick off 1400. Meanwhile, the club’s Hampshire Colts side will take on Bournemouth in the Plate final at Fordingbridge next Sunday, 6 April, kick off 1400. All support is welcome.
