Walking out in Style at Kinsgwood RFC
Our Walking Rugby players put in a creditable performance at the first competitive festival for many.
Salisbury’s relaunched Walking section played their first competitive matches over the August Bank Holiday weekend, with a trip to Kingswood RFC in Bristol.
Two mixed squads played under the traditional Bustards name and the Spitfires in honour of the new memorial at the Castle Road site. The results were very encouraging, with 6 wins, 4 draws and 2 losses across the 2 teams, with special mention to the Spitfires who were ably marshalled by Del Gurney to a record of 5 wins and one draw that matched the overall tournament winners from Cardiff who were awarded the trophy for scoring the most tries over the day. The Bustards had earlier played Cardiff, and although competitive against a very well drilled (and younger !) team, went down 5 tries to 2. The Spitfires standout game was Chippenham, coming back from a 3 try deficit to win 4:3, whilst both sides managed to defeat Gloucester with a combined score of 13:4.
Special mention to John Holt-Keen who was the oldest participant on the day, and Salisbury’s top try scorers Simon Hedges (8) Bob Carr (6) and Neil Bowditch (6). Thanks were extended to Dave Humphreys for all his work to get the squads to Kingswood, along with pitchside managers David Murley and Karen Pickering.
Training resumes on Thursday at 6pm.......at a leisurely pace this coming week.
