U15 v Trowbridge (CUP)

20-12
Sunday 07 January 2018, 10:00am 01:00pm

On Sunday Trowbridge visited Hudson’s Field (and the delights of the Prairie) for the U15’s first game after the Christmas Break. It was Round 4 of the D&W Cup. Both sides had recorded heavy wins over Devizes and North Dorset, and Salisbury had won 12-0 at Trowbridge in what was probably our best team performance of the season so far. So, the stage was set for a hard physical encounter.

Unfortunately, we lost the toss and had to play down the slope and with the wind first half. The boys started strongly, quickly putting into practice the game plan we had worked on at Wednesday training. The forwards put together some strong 3 man pods and attacked the B Channel really well. After 5 minutes SRFC opened the scoring through Adam Lucas. From the base of a scrum, Carlos K attacked the short side and the ball was moved through Charlie Wichary (9) and Harvey Drewett’s hands before Adam finished in the corner. Salisbury built on this shortly afterwards through a strong run by Ben L-P at inside centre.

Trowbridge rallied and drove hard to score under the posts to make it 10-7. SRFC continued to play well and Adam Lucas was back on the scoresheet finishing off a fine move after a forwards’ turnover. The ball flew through the hands of Alex B at 10, Ben L-P and  Sam in the centres, and a perfectly weighted grubber saw Adam pounce for a fine finish. Half time 15-7 up and the hill to come.

Playing uphill and into the wind in the second half Salisbury competed hard at the breakdown and won a number of steals through excellent work by the pack. A strong scrum break by Carlos K saw us extend the lead to 20-7 before Trowbridge attacked from deep scored under the posts to make it 20-12 with 10 minutes to play. From here the boys put in a great defensive shift to see the game out and ensure we remain top of the qualifying pool with 2 rounds to go.

Well done everyone. This was our best performance over the last 2 months. A real team effort. It was great to see a number of those not selected come along and support the squad, including Ollie Kennedy, Thom Trevett and Will Thompson (apologies if I have missed anyone…).

Next week we’ve got North Dorset RFC, away, in the Cup again. We will need to put out a strong squad to maintain our 100% record and to ensure qualification to the next stage of the competition. As you know we are limited by the Comp rules as to the squad size so please be patient if not selected. Your time and opportunity will come in the following weeks. Maximum attendance at training on Wednesday please as we still have a number of points to work on, both in attack and defence. Please ensure you respond to Teamer quickly to help with selection.

Well done again – a great team performance!
